Owala's powder coat is dense and even, so the laser cuts a clean, high-contrast line straight to the stainless steel. Names stay legible even at small sizes, which matters when the same bottle design carries twelve different staff names. Which colors engrave best
Every Owala coating engraves cleanly, but contrast varies with the color underneath. Dark bottles (Very Very Dark, Blue Oasis, Purple) give the highest contrast: bright silver lines on a deep field, legible from across a ward. Mid-tones like Neo Sage and Down to Earth read soft and premium, the choice we'd make for a gift. Pale bottles (Marshmallow, Boneyard) engrave in a subtle tone-on-tone steel that looks quietly expensive up close.
You never have to guess: the designer previews your exact name on a real photo of the color you picked, in the true engraving tone.
What to engrave on a FreeSip
The FreeSip's straight-walled body carries a vertical script name beautifully; it's the layout on most of the unit sets we ship. Horizontal block names suit the shorter 24 oz proportions when the name is brief; add a small motif (the stethoscope heart for nurses, an apple for teachers, a simple heart for everyone else) and the bottle reads as a designed object rather than a labeled one.
For families ordering a set, matching layout with different names and colors is the move: five bottles, five colors, one font, and nobody drinks from the wrong one again. The live preview shows each bottle exactly as it will engrave, so the whole set can be designed in one sitting.
Care and cleaning
Engraving removes the coating in the design area only. The bottle's insulation, lid, and seals are untouched, and the exposed stainless steel needs no special treatment. Follow Owala's own care guidance (hand wash the body, lid on the top rack), sanitize as often as hospital life demands, and the name stays exactly as engraved. Nothing to peel, chip, or re-apply: that's the point of doing it with a laser.

- Yes. Engraving only removes the thin outer coating in the design area on the body. The lid, seal, and insulation are untouched.
